Why it is made this way
Throwing produces rotational symmetry, which is why almost all ceramics are round. This vase is slab-built — flat sheets of clay cut, scored and joined — which allows a flat-sided, asymmetric form but means every seam is a potential failure in the kiln. The join lines are left visible rather than smoothed, because smoothing them weakens the seam and hides how the object was made.
