Why it is made this way
The shell is pressed from nine 1.2mm oak veneers in a single operation, which is the maximum our press achieves without the outer layer splitting at the lumbar curve. Fewer layers flex too much under load; more cracks. The legs meet the shell through a steel cross-brace rather than screwing directly into the ply, because end-grain ply holds a screw badly and will loosen within two years of daily use. The brace adds 40 minutes to assembly and roughly a decade to the chair.
