Why it is made this way

A spindle back is structurally worse than a solid splat and better to sit in, because each spindle flexes independently and the back takes the shape of the person rather than the other way round. The cost is fourteen morticed joints instead of two. We use hide glue rather than PVA — it is weaker in a laboratory and repairable in a workshop, which matters more over forty years, since a hide-glued joint can be steamed apart and re-made while a PVA joint has to be cut out. The oak is kiln dried to 8% and rested for six weeks before turning, otherwise the spindles move after assembly and the joints open.

Reviews4.5 / 5 · 2
  • The back gives just enough. I did not expect a hard wooden chair to be the most comfortable one at the table.

  • Beautiful, and the hide glue is a genuine argument rather than a marketing line. Long lead time.
