Why it is made this way

Paper cord is twisted kraft paper, and it is one of very few seat materials that improves with use: it compacts into the shape of the sitter over the first year and then stops moving. It takes a weaver a little over four hours per chair, which is most of the cost and the reason we cannot make more than about forty a month. The frame is ash rather than oak because the seat rails are under constant tension from the weave and ash takes that load without the splitting oak shows at the peg holes. The pegs are brass and left proud so a future weaver can find them.

  • A year in and the seat has moulded to me exactly as described. It is now the chair everyone fights over.

  • The proud brass pegs are the detail that sold it. Somebody thought about the second owner.
