Why it is made this way
A 900mm-wide solid top will expand and contract by up to 8mm across the grain between a humid summer and a heated winter. Most tables ignore this and eventually split. Breadboard ends — cross-grain pieces attached with drawbored mortises and elongated pegholes — let the top move while keeping the ends flat. The frame is bolted, not welded, so the table goes up a Copenhagen stairwell in three parts rather than not at all.
