Why it is made this way

A round table on four legs seats four badly, because at least one person always gets a leg. A single column solves that and creates a different problem: the whole moment of a leaning diner passes through one joint. We resolve it with mass rather than cleverness — a 9kg cast iron cruciform under the column, hidden but not disguised, which puts the centre of gravity low enough that the table cannot be tipped by an adult resting their weight on the edge. The top is a single 30mm slab, quarter-sawn and slip-matched so the annual movement across 1200mm stays under 3mm.

  • Use mats under anything hotter than 60°C
  • Re-oil twice yearly in the first year, then annually
  • Wipe spills immediately — oil is not a lacquer

  • No legs to negotiate and it does not wobble when someone leans on the edge. That was my only worry.

  • Specified six. Heavy to move for cleaning, which is the direct consequence of it being stable.
